Who Is Sarita Mor? 6th Indian Woman To Win Bronze At World Wrestling Championship

Who is Sarita Mor: Hailing from the Sonepat district of Haryana, Sarita Mor often got criticised by people around her for choosing a career in sports. Today, she became the sixth Indian woman to win bronze at the World Wrestling Championship.

On October 7, Mor secured a podium finish for herself by defeating Sweden's Johanna Lindborg at the World Wrestling Championship in Oslo, Norway, in the 59 kg category. During the match, Sarita Mor surprised the Swede with an early four-pointer and added two more points to her tally with a quick takedown. She won with six points.

This was also her sixth attempt to win a medal at the worlds, having failed to do so at four senior worlds and one U-23. Apart from Mor, 20-year-old Anshu Malik created history by winning a silver medal for India at the championships. The two thus produced Indian women wrestlers' best performance till date at the event.

Even with occasional injuries and setbacks, Sarita Mor hardly ever gave up and bounced back fast. Her love for wrestling has taken her to places and she makes sure to keep a record of both her hard work and travel in her social media handle, unapologetically.

1. Sarita Mor grew up in the Sonepat district and her first love was not wrestling, but kabaddi. She lost interest in the sport because of the coach's strictness.

2. An avid Instagrammer, Mor's handle is a chronicle of her training regiments and her travels around the globe.

3. A shoulder surgery in 2012 made her lose a couple of years of active wrestling but she bounced back and was selected in the national team.

4.  In 2019, she defeated Pooja Dhanda, who was India's bronze medalist at the 2018 world championship, at the selections for the 2019 world championship in Kazakhstan, surprising the medalist.

5. The same year, the Wrestling Federation of India came under fire for relaxing weight in the trials by one kilogram which allowed heavyweights wrestlers to participate in lower weight categories.

6. In 2017 she won the silver medal at Asian Championship in New Delhi. She also won a gold medal in the 59kg weight category at the 2020 Asian Wrestling Championship.

7. Before the 2019 world championships Mor felt that her lack of experience and maturity led to poor runs in championships. In an interview with Firstpost, she said that she felt the need to up her counterattacks game.

8. Sarita Mor is married to wrestler Rahul Mann, who now focuses more on coaching his wife.
