Who Is Rujira Banerjee? Why Did Abhishek Banerjee's Wife Move SC in Coal Scam Case?

Abhishek Banerjee wife Rujira Banerjee recently moved to the Supreme Court of India on being summoned by the Enforcement  Directorate in connection with the coal scam case on March 21. This move was reportedly made challenging ED's jurisdiction in connection with the money laundering case.

Abhishek Banerjee is the National General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress and nephew of the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee. The couple had arrived in Delhi yesterday for the interrogation. The case surfaced after the West Bengal Assembly Elections last year.

Earlier, they had sought direction from the Delhi High Court on not making an appearance in Delhi for the case as they were the residents of West Bengal. But on March 11, the court dismissed the plea on the summons.

Rujira Banerjee will be interrogated today. The case dates back to November 27, 2020, when the CBI's Kolkata Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) had filed a case of corruption and breach of trust in connection with illegal mining from the Eastern Coalfield Limited (ECL).

In 2020, the case was filed against Anup Manhji, Amit Kumar Dhar and Jayesh Chandra Rai (general managers), Tanmay Das (Chief of Security at ECL), amongst others. Throughout the investigation, the names of Rujira and Abhishek's sister-in-law are not enlisted as accused but their names have popped up during the interrogation.

In the CBI notice to Rujira, her relation to the case was mentioned as "is acquainted with the circumstances of the case noted below."

Who Is Rujira Banerjee? Abhishek Banerjee wife

Rujira Banerjee is a Thai national. She holds the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. She met Abhishek during college time at the now-closed Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) in New Delhi.

They got married in New Delhi in February 2012 and during that period news media had reported her name to be Jasmeet Ahuja. Though not much is known about her.

As per some media reports, Rujira's father is a resident of Rajouri Garden in New Delhi and owns a mobile gadget show in Karol Bagh. He had a business in Thailand, where Rujira was reportedly born.
