Amid rumours of her death circulating on the internet, actor Meenakshi Seshadri posted a photo Monday to her social media profile. Donning a richly coloured red kurta and sitting amidst flowers that match, the 57-year-old strikes a 'dance pose,' her look reminiscent of the grace she was noted for during the peak of her film career between the 1980s and 90s.
Meenakshi Seshadri left the industry after only a couple decades of acting, even as she was showered with immense adulation from audiences and critics. She made the move to the United States in the late 90s with her husband and is now the mother of two children.
Over the weekend, and especially owing to the COVID-19 scare which has claimed many film lives, a death hoax concerning Seshadri began doing the rounds in Twitter, WhatsApp and Facebook circles. Her latest Instagram post however quashes them. Recently, another veteran actor Tabassum Govil rubbished rumours of her death with an update on her health. See here.
Looking Back At Meenakshi Seshadri's Stellar Career In Films
Meenakshi Seshadri entered the world of glamour while still a teen, winning Eve's Weekly Miss India and representing the country at Miss International in Japan, both in 1981. Two years later, she made her film debut with Painter Babu. The movie did not do well, and the story goes, that a demotivated Seshadri was all ready to quit the industry.
Filmmaker Subhash Ghai, however, re-introduced her to the screen with his 1983 film Hero. It proved to be a wild success for both Seshadri and co-star Jackie Shroff, thrusting both of them into the national limelight overnight. After Hero, Seshadri delivered a string of some flops and many hits.
Among her most well-known works are Meri Jung, Jurm and Inaam Dus Hazaar. Though her mainstream trajectory was rocky, Seshadri was prominent for carving a niche in arthouse cinema that centred around women. Titles include Awaargi and Swati. A trained dancer as well, Seshadri's career spanned Tamil and Telugu languages.
Today, she resides in Texas with her family, running a dance school. A documentary Meenakshi Accept Her Wings was made on her life. She has chosen to largely stay out of camera sight after quitting films.
