Mahua Das Removed, Who Is Mahua Das
Who is Mahua Das? She has been removed from the post of President of the Parliament of Higher Education. Her removal is an outcome of the controversy over the results of the higher secondary examination this year.

Here's what you should know about her

Professor Mahua Das was appointed as the new president of WBCHSE in 2013 within a day of the Higher Secondary Council chief’s resignation. Das was earlier the principal of Women’s College, Bagbazar.

In 2020, prior to higher secondary examination, Mahua Das declared that stringent measures would be taken against those circulating purported images of question papers in WhatsApp groups to disrupt the exams. She also urged the media to reveal the source of any Whatsapp message to the council.

She was embroiled in a controversy in July this year when she highlighted the religious identity of the topper during the announcement of Class 12 results. According to the political leaders, the step was taken to appease Trinamool Congress. She had announced that a Muslim girl from Murshidabad district scored 499 out of 500 marks but she didn't mention her name.

She was called "a person without ethics and manners" a strict action against her was demanded from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

However, an official from WBCHSE said that Das mentioned the student’s religion to highlight how she fought social and economic hurdles to reach the top despite being a girl from the minority community.

The Congress student leaders were not convinced and had asked Das to either apologise for her careless statement or step down from her role as WBCHSE head.

As per sources, West Bengal BJP also emphasised on the fact that a topper's ability and not her religion should be give importance.
