Chum Darang entered the Bigg Boss 18 house following its grand premiere on October 6, marking the first time a contestant from north-east India has been part of the show. With her participation, Chum revealed that her aim is to introduce the audience to her culture and the beauty of her home state, Arunachal Pradesh.
When Chum Darang Revealed Her Aim
In an interview with News18 Showsha, Chum shared her excitement about being part of Bigg Boss. "This is the first time I’ve been offered Bigg Boss. Everybody watches Bigg Boss, and it’s a big show. I took it up because I looked at it as an opportunity to tell people that I come from a very beautiful state—Arunachal Pradesh," she explained.
It will be something new for people to watch someone from that part of the country. People from Arunachal Pradesh or north-eastern India don’t get such chances too often. One of the main reasons I’m doing this show is for people to see how diverse our country is.”
While Chum was excited to be part of the show, she also admitted to feeling nervous about the experience. "I’m really looking forward to my journey inside the house. I’m both excited and nervous. This is something different that I’m going to do. I’ll be sharing my personal space, bed, and bathroom with so many strangers. I’m not used to these things. That’s why I’m nervous," she said.
This season of Bigg Boss, themed ‘Time Ka Taandav,’ promises to be as dramatic and intense as ever. Alongside Chum Darang, other contestants include popular names like Alice Kaushik, Vivian DSena, Shilpa Shirodkar, Avinash Mishra, Karan Veer Mehra, and Shehzada Dhami, ensuring a thrilling season ahead.
All About Chum Darang
Actor Chum Darang is from a small town in Arunachal Pradesh. She started her career as a model. She represented the state in Miss Earth India, a beauty pageant in New Delhi and won the title of Miss Earth Water. She also won the Miss Tiara India International title.
In 2017, she took part in Miss Asia World, which was hosted in Lebanon. There, she won the title of Miss Popular and was crowned the fifth Runner-up. During that contest, she talked about how contestants called her Miss China. It irked her but she maintained her cool and dismissed their "confusion." She explained that India is full of diverse people with different colours, races and creeds.
She also runs a non-governmental organisation called Guardian of Blue Marble, through which she works towards environment conservation and women empowerment. Along with modelling, she has also been part of advertisements alongside Akshay Kumar, Ranveer Singh, amongst others.
Apart from modelling, acting and running an NGO, she also had been vocal about the discrimination faced by northeast people in the rest of India. On July 29, 2018, she posted a picture holding a poster with the words "I AM AN INDIAN" written with a black marker. The caption read, "Dear Prime Minister Of India, How long will we be treated as aliens in our own country? A deprived citizen, Miss Chum Darang, Village Misram, Pasighat, East Siang District, Arunachal Pradesh, India."
Bigg Boss 18 marks Chum's debut in reality television, although she has previously appeared in films such as Paatal Lok, Badhaai Do, and Gangubai Kathiawadi.
