Meet Dr B Sandhya, The First Woman Running For Kerala Police Chief

Who Is B Sandhya? In a first, a woman officer has been shortlisted for the post of Kerala Police Chief. According to reports, Fire Force chief Dr B Sandhya along with the Road Safety Commissioner Anil Kanth are on the final list of people to be considered for the post of Director General of Police in charge of law and order in the stare of Kerala.

The list previously had three people, but after the name of Tomin Thachankary was dropped, Dr Sandhya and Kanth are the two frontrunners in consideration for the post. The list was prepared by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) committee on Thursday, June 24. Read more about it here.

Who is B Sandhya?

Dr B Sandhya, who is an officer of the Indian Police Service, is currently serving as the Director-General of the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services, Home Guard & Civil Defence. With an MSc in Zoology, Dr Sandhya has trained in Human Resources Management from Wollongong University, Australia. She passed her PGDBA (Post Graduation Diploma in Business Analytics) from Pondicherry University and Earned her PhD from the Birla Institute of Technology ad Science, Pilani.

After passing the Indian Civil Services Examination in 1988, she joined the Indian Police Service and has served at several posts including Assistant Superintendent of Police, Joint Superintendent of Police, Superintendent of Police, District Superintendent of Police, Inspector General of Police and many more. Since 2013, Dr Sandhya holds the post of Additional Director General of Police and has also previously served in the CBCID (Crime-Branch Crime Investigation Department).

Apart from her work in the Police Department, Dr Sandhya is also known for her literary contributions earning her several awards including the Edasseri Award in 2007. She has published a number of books for children, along with many research papers in the field of Political Science. Dr Sandhya has also edited 'Impressions', and 'A Short History of Kerala Police' published by the Director-General of Police, Kerala, and has conceptualised a website called Kerala Police History.
