Who Is Anannyah Kumari Alex? Transwoman Activist Found Dead In Kerala

Who Is Anannyah Kumari Alex? She was a known celebrity make-up artist, radio jockey, and stage show anchor and the first transwoman from her community to file nomination papers as a candidate for the Kerala Assembly elections this year. She was reportedly found dead in her apartment in Kochi on Tuesday.

The Health Minister of Kerala, Veena George has ordered a probe into her death. In a statement, George said that the Kalamassery police in Ernakulam district, have already started an investigation into Alex's death.

The 28-year-old transwoman activist in Kerala filed nomination papers to contest in the Assembly Elections from Democratic Social Justice Party (DSJP) from the Vengara Constituency in Malappuram district in April this year, the transwoman had filed nomination papers as a candidate for the Democratic Social Justice Party (DSJP) from the Vengara constituency in Malappuram district.

Kumari was a radio jockey, celebrity makeup artist, stage show anchor, and activist. She was reportedly the first trans woman in Kerala to be a radio jockey. 

The 28-year-old was the first transwoman from her community to participate in the Assembly Elections of Kerala. She stood against the Muslin League PK Kunhalikutty and Left Democratic Front candidate P Jiji. But she dismissed her election campaign before the day of polling as she allegedly received death threats from leaders of her party. Kumari publicly made an appeal asking people not to vote for her party, DSJP on the last day of her withdrawal. 

Kumari recently raised allegations of laxity against the doctor who performed a sex-reassignment surgery on her last year. She had complained that even after a year of the surgery being done, she was unable to work due to severe physical pain.

Anannyah Kumari Alex was found dead in her flat at Edappally, Kochi. The body has been sent to the Medical College Hospital for post-mortem, and the COVID-19 tests. She is suspected to have died by suicide, as per the police statement.

The 28-year-old was also reportedly under financial pressure due to which she sufficed multiple jobs.

Kumari had reportedly said that she had tried "to be the voice of a marginalised community."

She was a higher secondary drop-out who wanted to continue her higher education. She had said, “Only through education any community can attain self-esteem and recognition. For us to hold our heads up, we need solid education.”
