Ajay Devgn will make his OTT debut this week with the web series Rudra. In this series, Devgn will be essaying the role of a cop, something that he seems to have mastered with his films, albeit with much darker shades to his character. Unlike Devgn's cop films that are riddled with set action pieces, bright colour and gravity-defying stunts, Rudra seems to be banking on a darker premise and mind games.
Devgn will essay on the role of DCP Rudraveer Singh, an officer who has solved most cases for a special crime unit at the cost of his personal life. Rudra is handed yet another high profile case, but this time the person he is after seems to be smarter and crueller than his previous suspects. As one of the characters challenges Singh, he says that he catches people who slip and what happens if they do not slip- and that seems to be the crux of the series.
Opening up about his debut on OTT, Devgn said, "My attempt has always been to tell unique stories and work with good talent. The idea is to raise the bar of entertainment in India. The digital world excites me and I am looking forward to working with Applause and BBC to bring this series to life."

Talking about his character, Rudra, Devgn said, "Rudra- The Edge of Darkness is a compelling and highly intriguing story and I can't wait to begin this new journey! Playing a cop on screen is not new to me, but this time the character is more intense, complex and dark. What drew me most to his persona, is that he is possibly the greyest character you may come across in recent times."
Rudra Cast
The psychological crime drama is based on the British TV show Luther and is directed by Rajesh Mapuskar, who has previously helmed the National Award-winner Marathi film Ventilator. The cast of the show also includes Esha Deol, Raashii Khanna in key roles, along with Atul Kulkarni, Ashwini Kalsekar, Ashish Vidyarthi.
On directing the seriesMapuskar said, "When I was offered the show, I knew I didn't want to sign up for a cut-and-paste job. Everything, from the characters to the nature of the crime, had to be tailored to the local sub-culture." He added that while he used popular filming locations such as the Asiatic Library and Gateway of India in the series, he explored these landmarks with new angles and thus capturing the sinister nature of Mumbai city.
