Where to watch Kurup? This is something that many cinema lovers are asking ahead of the release of Dulquer Salmaan's upcoming Malayalam film. The crime-thriller has generated a lot of pre-release buzz due to its cast and premise which is based on the life of a wanted man.
Film industries across the country are facing a shift right now, as theatres open up after one and a half years. Back in March 2020, cinemas had to shut their doors suddenly due to the COVID-19 scare. As cases began to pile up and lockdowns were extended, both filmmakers and viewers realised that COVID-19 was here to stay longer than expected. Facing uncertainty, many producers opted for on OTT release of their films, rather than waiting for theatres to open up.
Now as coronavirus cases are on a gradual decline after the deadly second wave of the pandemic, and with over a billion doses of vaccines administered across the country, both producers and viewers are itching to get back to the theatres. The last few weeks have seen many big theatrical releases, such as Sooryavanshi, Thalaivii, Annaatthe, Doctor and Enemy. However, films like Jai Bhim, MGR Magan, Hum Do Hamare Do, Meenakshi Sundareshwar and Rathnan Prapancha still went ahead with a direct-digital release plan. So where is Kurup headed for its release this week?
What is Kurup about
The true-crime film is based on the life of a man named Sukumara Kurup, who is said to be India's longest wanted fugitive. Kurup murdered a man named Chako, mutilated his face and then placed his body in a car that he set on fire, in order to claim the insurance policy in his own name.
In the film, Salmaan will be seen essaying the titular role, while Sobhita Dhulipala, Indrajith Sukumaran, Shine Tom Chacko, Bharath Niwas and Sunny Wayne will be seen in important roles.
Where To Watch Kurup
The film will be having a theatrical release on November 12. Speaking about the decision to not opt for an OTT release, the film's director Srinath Rajendran said that Kurup is a movie that was designed for a theatrical release. " The movie was filmed using anamorphic lens to get a rich widescreen experience. We also did the sound design using Dolby by expecting a theatre release." Rajendran further added that watching the movie on a mobile screen will never give viewers that experience or that technical quality. It is due to this realisation that the makers declined OTT release offers.
