The film by Vivek Agnihotri, The Kashmir Files opened up with Rs 14 crores in theatres but soon became a Rs 250 crore hit at the box office. The film was released for a theatrical viewing on March 1 and soon led to a hyped-up situation as ministers, prime minister and chief ministers started endorsing the film as the ultimate truth-teller of the Kashmiri Pandit exodus.

The film was promoted on various platforms and also through governmental policies wherein offices ended up declaring half days off for the government employees to view the film. Not just that, it was made tax-free in many states leading to the higher purchase of tickets and more audiences getting attracted through word of the mouth promotions as well.

The film had varied reactions as many loved the film for its telling a tale of the Kashmiri Pandits and the sufferings that they had to go through in the 1990s as they were forced to leave their house in order to save their life. While others criticised the film to have left an aftertaste of propaganda and hate amongst the general population, in an already triggered communal sensitivity.

The film, which is written and directed by Agnihotri is a film which claims to be based on the true story on the basis of the interviews of the first generation survivors of the Kashmiri Pandit community. The film was exempted from paying entertainment tax in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Haryana.
