From making her debut in the 1983 Punjabi film Aasra Pyar Da to winning awards for her role in Sardari Begum, she has managed to become a fan-favourite. Kher has also been applauded for her on-screen comic delivery besides playing serious roles too. Besides her acting, she has also become a successful politician as well.

Sardari Begum (1996) 

Kirron Kher delivered one of her best performances with this Shyam Benegal film. Her portrayal of a thumri singer named Sardari Begum who dies in a riot won her the 1997 National Film Award - Special Jury Award. The film explores the life of Sardari Begum who was known to be rebellious and determined to pursue music. A reporter ends up investigating her life instead of investigating the riot which actually killed Begum.

Bariwali (2000) 

The title of this Bengali film translates to The Lady of The HouseTrue to its title, it gives us a glimpse into the life of a solitary, lonely, middle-aged woman living all alone in her house. She is a rather unfortunate woman who lost her lover a night before their wedding. However, things start to look up when the lady of the house permits a film production unit to shoot in her house. As the shooting progresses, she starts falling for the charming film director who appears for the shooting. Kirron Kher's performance as Banalata, the Bariwali was well-appreciated and earned her the much-deserved National Film Award for Best Actress.

Devdas (2002)

The Sanjay Bhansali film is an adaptation of the 1917 novel written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. It explores the heartbreaking story of two lovers who never have a happily ever after. Kirron Kher plays the role of a doting mother (Sumitra Chakraborty)to Paro (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) who is awaiting the return of her childhood friend Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan). However, things don't work out well, and Sumitra is forced to marry off her daughter to an older man. Kher won the Best Supporting Actress award at the 4th IIFA Awards.

Khamosh Pani (2003) 

Khamosh Pani is a film that depicts the tragedy which unfolds on women during the India-Pakistan partition of 1947. Kirron Kher personifies a young widow who doesn't fall prey to the various customs of the society she lives in. She defies her relatives when she is asked to commit suicide in order to save the family honour.

Dostana (2008) 

This romantic comedy film directed by Tarun Mansukhani tells us the hilarious story of two men who pretend to be gay, in order to live on rent in an apartment. Kirron Kher plays the role of a mother who becomes furious when she is made to believe that her son is gay. Her hilariously angry depiction of a furious mother will make you cry tears of laughter.
