The Time 100 Next list shines a spotlight on a hundred rising stars that are shaping the future. The recently released list featured several Indian and Indian-origin influential up-and-comers.
The Time 100 Next 2022 list features people shaping the future of the fields of business, science, entertainment, sports, health and more. The 100 winners are divided into five categories, Artists, Phenoms, Innovators, Leaders, and Advocates.
The expansion of the Time 100 list focusing on up-and-coming figures features three rising stars who are Indian or Indian-origin. The feature profiles are written by established Time 100 alumni.
Time 100 Next 2022
Amrapali Gan
Amrapali Gan is an Indian-born American businesswoman who was listed in the Time 100 Next 2022 list under the category of Leaders. Born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, the businesswoman graduated from California State University, Los Angeles.
In December 2021, Gan was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of OnlyFans. Gan’s feature profile was written by Nik Popli, who mentioned that Gan took over as CEO when the company hit rough water. The company announced that it would ban the sexually explicit content that the social platform was known. However, the decision to ban sexually explicit content was rolled back.
Gan said, “I’m very proud to embrace our adult-content creators, and also all of our other creators”.
Under the 36-year-old’s leadership, the company also launched a safety and transparency centre. She had joined the company in September 2020 as chief marketing and communications officer.
Simone Ashley
Actor Simone Ashwini Pillai, known professionally as Simone Ashley took the internet by storm in her role as Kate Sharma in the period drama Bridgerton. She was listed in the Time 100 Next 2022 under the category Phenoms.
The Indian-origin actor’s feature was written by Lilly Singh, who commended her confidence onscreen.
The profile read, “I feel she is one of those actors you can cast in any scene and she’ll make it her own and steal the show”.
Akash Ambani
Akash Ambani is the son of Mukesh Ambani, the Indian billionaire businessman who is the second richest man in India. Ambani was featured in the Time 100 Next 2022 list under the category of leaders.
In the feature profile, Charlie Campbell described Akash Ambani as, “The scion of Indian industrialist royalty” and said that he was always expected to “rise in business”. Campbell also mentioned that the billionaire’s son played “a key role landing multibillion-dollar investments from Google and Facebook”.
Earlier this year, Ambani was promoted to chairman of Jio in June after being handed a board seat when he was just 22.
Indian And Indian-Origin Stars Featured In Time 100
Bela Bajaria
The Indian-American businesswoman Bela Bajaria joined Netflix as an executive overseeing all their English and vernacular original content. She was featured in the Time 100 list 2022 as one of the most influential people.
A profile on her was written by Mindy Kaling, who said Bajaria is "opening doors for women and people of colour by supporting them and giving them a platform to make hits.
Karuna Nundy
The lawyer at the Supreme Court of India Karuna Nundy was featured in the Time 100 list for her work as a champion of women's rights.
The feature profile was written by lawyer Menaka Guruswamy and mentioned her contributions, such as advocating for the reform of anti-rape laws, fighting cases related to sexual harassment in the workplace, and litigating a challenge to the law which contains a legal exemption for marital rape.
Alia Bhatt
Actor and producer Alia Bhatt was given the Time 100 Impact Awards for her contributions to entertainment media. Titled "Alia Bhatt Acts Like a Modern Woman - Flaws and All", the feature piece written by Laura Zornosa said the actor has a "very big year".
Deepika Padukone
Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone was given the Time 100 Impact Award. The feature profile was written by Sanya Mansoor and spoke about her role in critically acclaimed films.
The profile also mentioned how she launched the LiveLoveLaugh foundation, which works toward destigmatising mental health struggles and raise awareness.
