Samiya Arzoo, the wife of Pakistani cricketer Hasan Ali who dropped an important catch in Thursday's T20 World Cup semis match with New Zealand, has become the target of trolls on the internet. Both Arzoo and her husband are facing merciless abuse, on grounds of both their marriage and religion, against the context of Pakistan's match loss.
Arzoo hails from Haryana, India and tied the knot with Ali in 2019 in Dubai, where she presently works. She is trained as an aeronautical engineer. They became parents to a daughter earlier this year. Arzoo's father formerly held a position with the Haryana government, according to reports.
A section of social media users is alleging the New Zealand-Pakistan match, which was the deciding game for whether the latter team would play the finals, was "fixed" citing Arzoo's identity as an Indian. Memes and attacks are flooding Twitter, where Arzoo and Ali are suggestively being blamed for the loss.

According to Times of India, Arzoo's brother said the now-married couple met in Dubai in 2018 when Ali was there for a match. 2019 saw a series of border tensions between Pakistan and India, following the Pulwama terror attack in February. There was, thus, heated commentary on social media around Arzoo and Ali's cross-border marriage that same year.
T20 Matches Spark Hate, Communal Abuse Online
Besides Arzoo, top Indian tennis star Sania Mirza is also being trolled online after Pakistan's match. The 34-year-old is married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik. More here.
There was similar outrage when India lost to Pakistan last month in their T20 match. Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami was subjected to communal hate speech, with many netizens alluding to his religion to accuse him of siding his loyalties with the opponent team. Captain Virat Kohli's daughter too was sent rape threats on social media; a software engineer from Hyderabad was arrested in the case this week.
