Italian Film Industry Mourns Veteran Actor Monica Vitti's Death

The news of Monica Vitti's death was first confirmed by a Twitter post made by Italian writer and director, Walter Veltroni. For the last two decades, the veteran actor was suffering from Alzheimer's Disease.

The veteran actor and film icon Monica Vitti died at the age of 90 after suffering from a disease. Vitti's death comes as a huge loss to the Italian film industry. She was famous for her role in classic Italian movies by director Michelangelo Antonioni.

The veteran actor was an icon of the Italian film industry. Reacting to the news of Monica Vitti death, the Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities of Italy, Dario Franceschini, said in a statement, "Goodbye Monica Vitti, goodbye queen of Italian cinema. Today is a truly sad day, we have lost a great artist and a great Italian,". The news of her death came on February 2, 2022.

The news of Monica Vitti's death was first confirmed by a Twitter post made by Italian writer and director, Walter Veltroni. The announcement was made on behalf of Vitti's husband and Italian pianist, Robert Russo on February 2, 2022. For the last two decades, the veteran actor was suffering from Alzheimer's Disease.

Monica Vitti was born on November 3, 1931. A 1953 graduate from the National Academy of Dramatic Arts, Rome, Vitti played small and sometimes uncredited roles at the beginning of her career. She grabbed eyeballs with her role in the 1958 movie Le Dritte. In 1957, she joined director Michelangelo Antonioni's film Teatro Nuovo di Milano as a dubbing artist.

Monica Vitti rose to fame with the role she played in Antonioni's 1960 movie L'Avventura where she portrayed a girl who got into a relationship with the boyfriend of her missing girlfriend. She then went on to feature in many of Antonioni's hit and acclaimed films like La Notte, Le notti bianche and L'Eclisse.

After starring in many of Antonioni's films, Monica Vitti changed her focus to comedy films and starred in films by Mario Monicelli. The recipient of prestigious awards like Golden Globe, Golden Plate, Golden Grail and BAFTA nomination, Monica Vitti left a glorious legacy behind her.
