The 47th Toronto International Film Festival, held between September 8 to September 18, proved to be remarkable for Indian films. To Kill A Tiger and While We Watched emerged as the winners of the Amplify Voice Awards, as the festival came to a close. The two movies based in India bagged the shoutout because of their deeply significant subjects.

Indian films had a significant run at TIFF this year as several films premiered at the festival and earned great appreciation. Several celebrities marked their presence at the festival this year including Shabana Azmi, Radhika Madan, Rajat Barmecha, and Ayush Mehra among others.

To Kill A Tiger - Winner

Directed by Independent filmmaker Nisha Pahuja, To Kill A Tiger explores the story of a teenage girl from a rural background in India. The girl, who is brutally gang-raped, is stuck in the trial of her life alongside her father who fights the village and the system to get his daughter justice and bring her life back to her with utmost dignity. The documentary is a courageous attempt at exploring the brutal aftermath of rape in the country, the injustice that prevails, and the deep-rooted patriarchy that blames the survivor, not the culprit. Pahuja is known for her documentaries like The World Before Her, Bollywood Bound and Diamond road.
While We Watched (or Namaskar! Main Ravish Kumar) - Winner
The film, which courageously shows the challenges that the Indian media faces today, fetched the Amplify Voice Award for the best feature by a biopic filmmaker. Filmmaker Vinay Shukla highlights the bold stand media group NDTV took against the current Indian Government policies. The film explores this through the eyes of Ravish Kumar, NDTV group editor and journalist.

Gauri - Winner
Directed by Kavitha Lankesh, sister of late journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh, the documentary won the Best Human Rights film at TIFF. The film explores the physical and verbal threats that the late activist faced during her life alongside the threats that journalists face every day in the world's largest democracy.

Featuring actors Radhika Madan, Rajat Barmecha and Ayush Mehra in lead roles, the film explores the lives of two siblings who struggle to find their identities amidst expectations from family and society. Directed by Shubhag Yogi, the film marked its premiere at TIFF with the star cast in attendance.

What's Love Got to Do With It

Director Shekhar Kapur helmed rom-com What’s Love Got to Do With It made its mark at TIFF this year and had the lead cast attend the premiere on September 10. The star cast includes actors Shabana Azmi, Sajal Aly, Lily James, Shazad Latif and Emma Thompson. The film explores the theme of cross-cultural British romantic comedy. Written and co-produced by Jemima Khan, the film also has singers Kanika Kapoor and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan as a part of the soundtrack.

Zwigato
Directed by Nandita Das, Zwigato features actor-comedian Kapil Sharma and actor Shahana Goswami in the film. The film premiered at TIFF on September 14 under the Contemporary World Cinema section. The film explores the family life and workings of a food delivery boy whose life revolves around ratings and making ends meet. Applause Entertainment recently released an international ">trailer of the film which looks promising and real.  

Tora’s Husband

Directed by Rima Das, Tora's husband sheds a spotlight on the aftermath of the brutal Covid-18 pandemic in the small town of Assam. The film explores the life of a man who survives the pandemic and how he struggles with the effects of lockdown ad loss.
