Christmas Songs
All I Want For Christmas Is You
It's hard to imagine, but Mariah Carey's perpetual earworm was once just a forgotten novelty tune from another generic pop-singer holiday album. One of the best indicators that the holidays have arrived in the post-Love Actually world is ">hearing "All I Want For Christmas Is You" for the first time in a year. When it was first released in 1995, the song fizzled out quickly but gained cultural cachet in the 2000s. Its popularity gradually increased each year until it ultimately topped the US charts in 2019 and the UK charts in 2020.
Last Christmas
Sleighbells, synthesisers, and some incredibly unique knitwear are all there in the ">video for "Last Christmas," a ballad about a tragic romance. George Michael's heart-on-sleeve delivery of "Last Christmas," with lines like "My God! I thought you were someone to rely on," and sad, sensual whispers, is what really makes the song stand out.
Stay Another Day
It wasn't intended to be a Christmas song at all, but East 17's all-time favourite is now a holiday staple. Tony Mortimer, a songwriter for the Walthamstow, England-based band, recently revealed to us that the song was genuinely terribly sad and was motivated by his brother's suicide. The result is a masterful exercise in holiday gloom and the group's stunningly sombre four-part harmonies appear to absorb that raw emotion. Even the inevitable Christmas ">song sleigh bells seem to do the same.
Happy Xmas
The iconic Christmas ">song about peace on earth by John Lennon and Yoko Ono has transcended its original anti-Vietnam War intent to become a holiday mainstay. It is euphoric and biting, as hopeful as it is sad.
Jingle Bell Rock
The most well-known version of this holiday standard was made by Bobby Helms in 1957, but Hall & Oates released it as a single with a must-see music ">video in the early 1980s.
