Hema Malini Dharmendra Anniversary
In 1957, Dharmendra was married to Prakash Kaur, with whom he had four children named--Bobby and Sunny Deol, Vijeeta and Ajeeta.
Later, Dharmendra moved to Mumbai to pursue his dream as an actor. He met Hema Malini on the sets of Tum Haseen Main Jawan in the year 1970. It was love at first sight for Dharmendra but Hema Malini did not reciprocate the same. She had expressed her disinterest in dating a married man very clearly.
Hema Malini, the dream girl, back in the days was getting marriage proposals from big names in the industry like Jeetendra and Sanjeev Kumar, however, she had turned all of them down.
She found her love later in the same guy who was already smitten with her, Dharmendra. She had in past spoken about how she got attracted to him during the shoot of Pratiggya. It was during the song sequence of Main Jat Yamla Pagla Deewana when she truly fell for him.
Even though her family was rooting for Jeetendra, who in his book even mentioned that he was not in love with her but had agreed to marry her as his family wanted him to do so. They had decided on getting married secretly when Dharmendra decided to give the plot a twist. He flew to Chennai with Jeetendra's then-girlfriend--Shobha Sippy.
Hema Malini's father was against Dharmendra, however, Dharmendra remained adamant. Choosing him over Jeetendra, Hema Malini married him after the demise of her father. She went against her family and stuck to her original choice.
But troubles for the young couple blindly in love did not end here. Dharmendra's wife Kaur was not ready to divorce him so he chose to convert to Islam in order to marry Hema Malini. Things remain sour as Kaur made a public statement and said, "I can understand what Hema is going through. Even she has to face the world, her relatives, and her friends. But if I were in Hema's place, I wouldn't have done what she did. As a woman, I can understand her feelings but as a wife and a mother I do not approve of them."
