The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) is renowned as the biggest yearly celebration of Indian cinema beyond the borders of India. With each passing year, the festival presents a wide array of diverse, inclusive, and revolutionary films that truly embody the essence of Indian cinema.
As it enters its 14th edition, the festival is scheduled to run from August 11 to August 20, continuing its tradition of showcasing the very best of Indian cinema to a global audience.
Here's IFFM 2023 Film Lineup:
Ghoomer
Saiyami Kher and Abhishek Bachchan starrer Ghoomer, directed by R. Balki will have its premiere at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2023 (IFFM) on August 12 at Hoyts, Docklands.
Abhishek Bachchan shared the film's poster on his Instagram, showcasing an intense look alongside his co-star Saiyami Kher. Ghoomer tells the story of a paraplegic sportsperson, portrayed by Kher, who excels as a cricketer under the guidance of her coach, played by Bachchan. Saiyami Kher also shared her delight, emphasising that playing a sport on screen was her long-cherished dream. She revealed that the film is not just about sports but also a story of triumph over adversity, making it physically and emotionally demanding. She feels privileged to have Ghoomer showcased at IFFM, especially in the sports capital of the world, Australia.
Lord Curzon Ki Haveli
The second film on the list is Lord Curzon Ki Haveli, a black comedy film written by Bikas Ranjan Mishra. The movie features a talented cast, including Arjun Mathur, Rasika Dugal, Paresh Pahuja, Zoha Rahman, and Tanmay Dhaninia. It is set to have its world premiere as the 'Centrepiece Spotlight Film' in the Official Selection—Out Of Competition category at the prestigious IFFM.
The film explores the Asian diaspora in the UK and is notable for being the first mainstream Indian feature shot entirely on a single lens. Filmed in the UK the previous year, it promises to offer a unique and modern cinematic experience for audiences worldwide. Paolo Bertolin, a member of the Selection Committee at the Venice International Film Festival, has praised the movie as a thought-provoking work that delves into themes of identity and gender while providing an entertaining mystery.
Sanaa
Another film, Sanaa, directed by Sudhanshu, is also set to make its Australian premiere at the IFFM. The movie has already been screened at various prestigious film festivals worldwide, such as The Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, and the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, among others. It stars Radhika Madan in the lead role and follows the journey of an ambitious woman who is grappling with internal struggles stemming from unresolved trauma.The film also stars Soham Shah, Shikha Talsania and Pooja Bhatt.
Kennedy
Anurag Kashyap's film, Kennedy, has been chosen as the closing night feature at the IIFM. Having premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May of this year, Kennedy has garnered praise from critics, being lauded as a thought-provoking and exceptional cinematic work. The movie narrates the story of a presumed deceased, insomniac former police officer who becomes embroiled in a corrupt system, driven by a desire for revenge. The lead roles in Kennedy are portrayed by Sunny Leone and Rahul Bhat.
