Gangubai Kathiawadi where to watchi: Alia Bhatt’s ambitious biopic Gangubai Kathiawadi is set to release on February 25, 2022. The film, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is based on life of mafia queen Gangubai. She owned a brothel.

She is known for championing the rights of sex workers and operated from the Hiramandi red light area. Owing to her social work, her statue was erected in the Kamathipura area. The film is based on chapters from Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges’ book Mafia Queens Of Mumbai.

Controversy post trailer release

The movie also came out with its ">trailer recently. "A story of strength, inspiration and resilience. This year, we celebrate the journey of a girl who not only rose to power but reigned supreme. Presenting the official trailer of the much-awaited, #GangubaiKathiawadi”,  reads the caption of the trailer but it didn't go down well with Babu Raoji Shah, who claims to be Gangubai’s adopted son and Bharti, Gangubai’s grandaughter.

According to them, she has been portrayed as a prostitute. "People are now saying inexplicable things about my mother.” The family had also filed a petition against the release of the film in 2021.

As per a report, the granddaughter of Gangubai, Bharti said that the makers of the biopic have defamed her family out of greed for money. She is irked by the fact that the makers did not ask for her family's consent before announcing the film.

“My grandmother has worked for the upliftment of the sex workers there throughout her life. What have these people turned my grandmother into,” Bharti added.

Besides Gangubai Kathiawadi, the actor will be seen in Karan Johar’s upcoming film Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani which also stars Ranveer Singh. She will also be seen in Darlings which is her debut as a producer. She will be sharing the screen with Shefali Shah, Vijay Varma and Roshan Mathew in key roles.
