Gangubai Kathiawadi box office collection crosse major benchmark. Alia Bhatt's Gangubai Kathiawadi seems to be unstoppable at the box office. The film, based on the life of brothel madame turned social activist Gangubai Kothewali has minted over 100 crore rupees worldwide, in just a week of its release.
Bhansali Productions shared in a tweet on March 4 that the film's global gross box office collection stood at 108.3 crores as of Friday. "Itna saara pyaar dene ke liye THEEEENK YOUUUU," read the tweet shared by the production house.
Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film also features, Ajay Devgn, Jim Sarbh, Vijay Raaz, Seema Pahwa and Shantanu Maheshwari. Actor Huma Qureshi makes a special appearance in the film in one of its song sequences.
With this feat, Gangubai Kathiawadi becomes the first Hindi film to cross the 100 crore mark in 2022. The film's release was postponed multiple times last year due to restrictions on theatres caused by COVID-19 pandemic. There were rumours of the film eventually opting for an OTT release. However, the makers of the film decided to wait out the pandemic and release the films in theatres.

What is Gangubai Kathiawadi about?
The film is based on select chapters of Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges' book Mafia Queens Of Mumbai and revolves around a teenager from a well-off family in Gujarat who is sold into the sex trade by her dubious lover. Eventually, Gangubai rallies the women working in sex trade, demanding better working conditions. While she rose through the ranks to become a brothel madame, it is said that she always fought for the rights of sex workers and their children.
Bhansali's film promises to capture Gangubai's journey in all its glory, however, it was met with a lot of resistance from her family prior to its release. Her adopted son Babu Raoji Shah had filed a petition against the makers of Gangubai Kathiawadi, demanding a stay on the film. In an interview, prior to the film's release, Shah had slammed Bhansali for his "vulgar" portrayal of his mother. However, the Bombay High Court refused to issue a stay on the release of Gangubai Kathiawadi, also issuing an interim stay order on criminal defamation proceedings against the makers of the film.
