After being postponed for two consecutive dates, Malik is rescheduled to release on an OTT platform this August. The much-anticipated film's plot is based on a man's revolt against the corruption in his village.
Here are eight things about the upcoming communal riots drama:
- The south Indian drama, the trailer of which unveils itself with an action scene set with a communal angle, is a gangster flick that stars Fahadh Faasil, Vinay Forrt, Joju George, Dileesh Pothan, Nimisha Sajayan and Biju Menon.
- The film is directed as well as written by Mahesh Narayanan.
- As revealed by the producer of the film Anto Joseph, he skipped the theatrical release of the film even though his previous intentions were to release the film in theatres.
- Instead of a theatrical release, Joseph opted for an OTT release because, "there is no clarity on when the theatres will reopen and given the existing economic hurdles," Joseph said, "I’m trying for an OTT release for these films."
- As stated by the Cold Case producer, Malik will only recover the production costs only if 100 per cent occupancy is allowed at the theatres which have only allowed 50% as recorded in February 2021.
- Sources claim that the producing team is facing a "financial crunch" which added to the reason for an OTT release instead of theatres.
- Although no official details of which streaming platform would stream the film has been revealed yet, the industry buzz, according to an article by the Indian Express, suggests that Amazon Prime Video will step up to take up all of Joseph's upcoming releases, including Malik.
- Originally scheduled to release in April 2020, the film postponed in light of the COVID-19 situation that prevailed at the time and was rescheduled for May 13, 2021, however, was postponed once again because of the second wave of the virus. As of now, the film is set to release on August 13, 2021, on an online streaming platform.
