Writer and filmmaker Tahira Kashyap celebrates her birthday today. A breast cancer survivor, Kashyap is married to actor Ayushmann Khurrana and has two children with him, Virajveer and Varushka. Over the last few years Kashyap has shared her journey of receiving cancer diagnosis, ensuing treatment and coming out on top of it. Last year, she also published her first book The 12 Commandments of Being a Woman.
Not just cancer though, Kashyap has also spoken about equality in marriage, breaking stereotypes and carving her own identity despite being married to a Bollywood superstar. A vocal feminist, a doting mother and wive, Kashyap never backs down from speaking her mind and that's what makes her stand out.
Here are some inspirational Tahira Kashyap quotes to mark her 39th birthday:
In February last year, Kashyap had shared a video in which she is seen reciting a poem that captures her journey as a cancer survivor. "Hide not your scars, my love, show them, flaunt them, just like your bright smile, soothing to other eyes,” she says.
In August 2021, Kashyap had announced her debut full-length Hindi film Sharmaji Ki Beti. The film, however, doesn't feature her husband and has a women-led cast. In a 2020 interview, Kashyap had made it clear that she need to earn the honour of directing her husband. Tahira said that she would love to work with her husband, adding, "At the same time he is a senior to me when it comes to working. So I need to earn myself a couple of films or a position where I deserve to direct him.”

4. Tahira Kashyap has time and again tried to normalised scars from surgery for breast cancer and how they do not affect a woman in a way society tends to project it. " I truly embrace all my scars as they are my badges of honour. There is nothing known as perfect. Happiness lies in truly accepting yourself. This was a tough one for me. But this picture was my decision as I want to celebrate not the disease but the spirit with which I endured, " she wrote in an Instagram post.
She even spoke about how women are expected to behave and be - "The world expects women to behave and react in a certain way which is far away from how we think and function. I found this disconnect a bit hilarious."
Being married to Ayushman Khurana who treats her as equal, she has talked about how it is something to be lauded - "To have a partner who treats you as an equal isn't applause-worthy, it's just basic".
Kashyap had once spoken about men giving permission to women and why it wasn't as supportive an act as many wanted to believe. "But what is this support? I understand crotch-supportive gear for men during their gym routines. I understand underwire bras as support for breasts. But how is men giving permission to women supportive?"
Speaking on how men need to see their wives as equals, Kashyap said, "Please take as much pride in her journey as you would take in yours. She is your partner, not a lesser being!"
