The ongoing legal battle between Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt has escalated, with Jolie's legal team filing a petition in a Los Angeles court alleging physical abuse by Pitt. The latest development arises amidst a dispute over a French winery the former couple co-owned. According to CNN, the documents were filed on Thursday, April 4 revealing Jolie's claims that Pitt influenced her into signing a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) preventing her from discussing his alleged abuse.
Angelia Jolie Alleges Brad Pitt Has "History Of Physical Abuse"
This new legal filing is a response to Pitt's 2022 lawsuit, where he alleged that neither party could sell their stake in the winery without the other's consent. In June 2023, Pitt accused Jolie's sale of her stake as "vindictive" following an "adverse court ruling." Jolie contends that Pitt's history of abuse predates their infamous 2016 plane incident from France to Los Angeles, as reported by CNN. The couple finalised their divorce in 2019.
The filing suggests that Jolie will provide evidence at trial, including testimony, emails, and photographs, to support her claims against Pitt. It alleges that Pitt's attempt to purchase Jolie's interest in the winery was thwarted when she refused to agree to a new NDA. Pitt has denied all allegations of abuse and has not yet responded to the latest filings.
Jolie's attorney, Paul Murphy, criticised Pitt's actions, accusing him of attempting to control and financially drain her while concealing his alleged history of abuse. These developments underscore the continued acrimony between the former spouses as their legal battle intensifies.
Angelina Jolie Accuses Brad Pitt
The court filing also consisted of descriptions of abuse that allegedly took place in September 2016.The court filing alleged, “Pitt’s aggressive behaviour started even before the family got to the airport, with Pitt having a confrontation with one of the children.” Jolie claimed that Pitt accused her of being “too deferential to the children” and proceeded to attack her verbally. Pitt allegedly dragged her into the bathroom and started yelling at her.
The court filing further alleged, “Pitt grabbed Jolie by the head and shook her, and then grabbed her shoulders and shook her again before pushing her into the bathroom wall”.
The filing claimed that Pitt lunged toward their child and Jolie grabbed onto him from behind to stop him. To remove Jolie off his back, Pitt allegedly threw himself back into the plane’s seats and injured her back and elbow.
Jolie also alleged that Pitt choked on of their children and struck another child in the face.
The filing claimed that Pitt poured beer on Jolie and also poured beer and red wine on their children during the flight. Pitt also allegedly periodically emerged from the back of the plane to yell at Jolie and his children.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigated the incident in 2016 and authorities decided not to press charges.
Jolie’s claims of abusive behaviour by her ex-husband on the flight had emerged in previous court papers, including in the former couple’s divorce settlement. A judge awarded joint custody of the children to Pitt and Jolie last year.
The court filing is part of the ongoing lawsuit over Chateau Miraval SA, the home and vineyard in France that the former couple acquired together.
