She had her first lead role in Karan Johar's teen drama Student of the Year in 2012, after making her acting debut as a child in the thriller Sangharsh in 1999. With Gangubai Kathiawadi, she has had a ten-year acting career and is praised for her performance.

With the thriller Heart of Stone, starring Gal Gadot, she will make her Hollywood debut. The feature film, directed by Tom Harper, will be a Netflix original. Written by Allison Schroeder and Greg Rucka, Heart of Stone is described as a spy thriller.

The film is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and is based on selected chapters of Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges' book, Mafia Queens of Mumbai. It follows a youngster from a wealthy Gujarat family who is sold into the sex trade by her shady lover. Alia Bhatt as Gangubai eventually unites the women in the sex trade to demand better working conditions. She is claimed to have constantly advocated for the rights of sex workers and their children as she progressed up the ranks to become a brothel madame.

Gully Boy is a 2019 Indian Hindi-language musical drama film directed by Zoya Akhtar and released in India. In the film, Alia Bhatt plays Safeena, a feisty young woman with a bright future as a surgeon and a lack of control over her wrath. Safeena has her own thoughts, feelings, and vision, and Murad is only a small part of it. Murad's struggle against society is depicted in the film, but Safeena's journey is equally captivating. Bhatt's impulsiveness and possessive temperament shone across the screen. Many people wanted a sequel to Safeena's narrative.

Udta Punjab is a 2016 Indian criminal thriller starring Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor, and Diljit Dosanjh.
