Who Is Harjinder Kaur? Weightlifter Snags Bronze Medal At Commonwealth Games 2022

Harjinder Kaur snagged the bronze medal in the women’s 71 kg weightlifting competition at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022. Kaur clinched the bronze with a score of 212.

Harjinder Kaur snagged the bronze medal in the women’s 71 kg weightlifting competition at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022. Kaur clinched the bronze with a score of 212 after Nigeria’s gold medal favourite Koy Eze fouled in all three of her attempts in the clean and jerk round.

Weightlifter Harjinder Kaur had three attempts for the snatch round and three attempts for the clean and jerk round.  In her first attempt in the snatch round, Kaur failed to lift 90 kg. In her second attempt, she lifted 90 kg and in her third attempt, she lifted 93 kg. With a score of 93 in the snatch rounds, she proceeded to the clean and jerk round.

In the clean and jerk round, Kaur lifted 113 kg in her first attempt, 116 kg in her second attempt, and 119 kg on her final attempt, scoring 119 in the round. The weightlifter finished with a total of 212, scoring 93 in snatch and 119 in clean and jerk.

Kaur finished two points behind silver medal winner Alexis Ashworth from Canada, and England’s Sarah Davies snagged the gold with a score of 229.

Who Is Harjinder Kaur?

  • The 25-year-old weightlifter Harjinder Kaur hails from Mehas village in Punjab. She began weightlifting for the first time in 2016 after she was introduced to the sport during college.
  • Kaur’s father is a farmer and lacked in financial means to support her career. However, Kaur said in an interview with India Today, “I have been morally supported by my family.” She added that her coach Paramjeet Sharma was very supportive and had faith that she would win a medal at the CWG.
  • She met her coach at her college, Punjabi University in Patiala in the sports wing.
  • Kaur spoke about her victory at the Commonwealth Games 2022 and said, “there was definitely some divine intervention today”.
  • Kaur said that while people do not win medals without hard work, some divine intervention played a hand in her victory.
  • Kaur also said, “I am happy with the medal, but I was not happy with my performance”. She said that she had the ability to lift more weight and planned to match that during the game, but her attempts fell short.
