Tasnim Mir: Meet The First Indian Under-19 Badminton Player To Rank World Number One

Badminton Player Tasnim Mir created history by becoming the world no. 1 in the Under-19 girls singles on Wednesday. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) released its latest junior rankings which revealed that Tasnim Mir had secured the top spot. The sixteen-year-old, who secured 10,081 points, is the first Indian to achieve world no.1 spot in the category.

“Finally, my dream comes true as I became the World No.1 in the junior category. I am thankful to my parents, family members, the Government of Gujarat, the Sports Authority of India, coaches, and support Staff. I am also grateful to my well-wishers and sponsors, Gujarat Badminton Association and Badminton Association of India, for continuous support in my journey towards becoming world No. 1." said Tasnim Mir.

The world no.1 had a stellar run in 2021 when she secured titles in three junior international tournaments that helped her jump three places ahead to secure the top position in the junior world rankings.

It was Mir's father, Irfan Mir, a badminton coach who is also Assistant Police Sub Inspector with Mehsana Police, who introduced her to the sport. The shuttler had started her training at the Pullela Gopichand Academy in 2017, but as her mixed doubles partner Ayan Rashid trains in Assam Badminton Academy in Guwahati, she decided to shift there in 2020.

"I am really thrilled by this feat. It's a great honour. I was not expecting this at all as I stopped playing in this age group. I was world no.1 last year and never thought I will become no.1" said Mir.

"I think winning titles in Dubai, Bulgaria and Nepal International helped me secure the ranking points. This will surely bolster my confidence" said Mir who is positive that the rank will bolster her confidence.

Looking ahead, the sixteen-year-old girl has her eyes on the senior category. "Last year I started playing the senior category with Bangladesh International. I want to do well in this section" she revealed.

Tasnim is currently focussing on women's singles this year and is training with coach Edwin Iriawan of Indonesia in Guwahati. She will be competing in two international tournaments next month.

Anuapama Upadhyaya is also featured in the top-10 list of world junior rankings. The 17-year-old from Haryana has been training at the Bengaluru-based Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy for the last couple of years

Samiya Imad Farooqui of Telangana came close to becoming World No. 1 last year when she reached the second spot in the Badminton World Federation junior rankings.
