From athletics to politics, Indian Olympic shooter Shreyasi Singh leaves no stone unturned in her pursuit of excellence and bringing laurels for her country. The 32-year-old MLA of Bihar's Jamui is representing India in the double trap event at the Paris Olympics 2024. The Arjuna awardee holds a distinguished portfolio in the sport, winning gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, ISSF World Cup, and more international events. Singh was named to the Indian shooting team for the Games announced by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) in June 2024 via quota swap.
Who Is Shreyasi Singh?
Shreyasi Singh's enthusiasm for shooting stemmed from her father and grandfather, both presidents of the National Rifle Association of India in their lifetimes. Her mother, Putul Singh, and her late father Digvijay Singh have been Members of Parliament from Bihar, influencing the athlete to also carry on the family's political legacy.
Singh's professional senior career in shooting began when she qualified for the 2013 Commonwealth Games. At the 2014 CWG in Glasgow, she won a silver medal in the singles double trap event, setting a precedent for her victorious future. At the 2018 CWG, she clinched a gold in the same event. Singh also won the gold medal in the 61st National Shooting Championship while representing Bihar in 2017.
At the 63rd National Shooting Championship for shotgun events in New Delhi, Singh gave India a spectacular beginning to the week and a reason to rejoice as she won the women's Trap crown. While this was her fourth individual career National title, it was her historic first in Women's Trap.
Shreyasi Singh joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2020 and won the 2020 Bihar Legislative Assembly election from Jamui with a margin of over 41,000 votes. Recognising her spectacular talent, the athlete-cum-MLA was also honoured with the Arjuna Award in 2018, by then President Ram Nath Kovind.
