PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist once again struck the headlines, this time for becoming one of the highest-paid female athletes in 2022 by Forbes on December 22.
PV Sindhu Highest Paid Athlete On Forbes List
The American magazine Forbes released the list of the top 25 female athletes, and PV Sindhu is the only shuttler and Indian on the list. Sindhu is the world’s 12th highest-paid female athlete with a total earning of $7.1 million (Rs.59 crore approximately). Among PV. Sindhu's earnings, $7 million came off the field, whereas only $100,000 was earned through on-field earnings.
Sindhu left behind her peers like Olympic gold medallist Chen Yufei of China, world champion Akane Yamaguchi, and three-time world champion Carolina Marin. and more. Earlier in 2021, Sindhu was named in the Top 7 Highest earning Female Athletes in the World.
Sindhu currently recovering from a stress fracture on her ankle started 2022 by winning the Syed Modi India International in Lucknow in January and next was the Swiss Open crown in Basel in March. The world No. 6 won the third title of the year at the Singapore Open in July. Also, won a historic gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Sindhu never dropped out of the top 8 in world rankings for the entire year.
Forbes list was topped by Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka for the third year in a row with a total wealth of $51.1 million. The 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams was second in a row with total earnings of $41.3 million. China’s 19-year-old skier Eileen Gu is third on the list with $20.1 million. The top 10 included seven tennis players with the highest total earnings. The others in the top 10 list were Gu, American gymnast Simone Biles and Australian golfer Minjee Lee. Besides for the first time, eight women have earned $10 million each, which is twice the number from a year ago. The players on the top 25 list earned a total wealth of $285 million before taxes, among which the first top 10 accounted for a total wealth of $194 million.
