Uma Chetry scripted history by becoming the first cricketer from the northeastern state to be selected for the country’s national squad.
Recently, BCCI announced the Indian women's cricket team's ODI and T20 squads for Bangladesh tour this month. The Indian team will play three T20Is and as many ODIs against Bangladesh. Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur will be the venue for all six matches.
Uma Chetry made her place by replacing wicketkeepers Richa Ghosh and Renuka Singh. With Ghosh and Singh not being on a team, Uma Chetry and another cricketer Yastika Bhatia got entry into the national cricket team.
Who Is Uma Chetry?
Uma Chetry broke the barriers and made her position on the team. Uma Chetry hails from the Golaghat district in Assam. She lives in the Kandulimari village of Bokakhat near Kaziranga National Park. Earlier, Chetry was part of the India A team, which won the U-23 Asia Emerging Cricket Tournament. Uma Chetry played a key role in the two matches that she played in the tournament, she scored 22 runs off 20 balls.
The 20-year-old was reportedly pushed by her mother to break barriers and achieve everything she ever dreamt of. Chetry worked with her parents on the farm to help them with finances. Her parents reportedly worked as daily wage labourers. She quit her education in 10th grade and took up cricket, now bagged the opportunity to play in the national team. Her brother picked up the job of autorickshaw driver to support the family and Uma's dream. Uma is the youngest and the only girl among five siblings.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote a congratulatory tweet. The tweet read- Cricketing in Assam enters a glorious new chapter as we proudly witness our first-ever representation in the Indian Women's National Cricket Team. Congratulations to Uma Chetry for her remarkable achievement, becoming the trailblazer from our state to don the Blue jersey! We support Uma and the team in their upcoming tour to Bangladesh, wishing them resounding success on the field.
The 20-year-old is currently at the ACA in Guwahati and later this week will join the India team in Mumbai. Later, leave for Mirpur in Bangladesh to participate in ODIs and T20s against Bangladesh from July nine.
