The Commonwealth Games 2022 will be held in Birmingham, England and the entire city is excited to host sportspeople from all around the commonwealth countries. One important part of the Commonwealth Games is its official mascot and over years, the world has seen many popular and adorable mascots that represented the culture and tradition of the host city. This year, the official mascot of the games is Perry The Bull, whose look was inspired by the designs of a 10-year-old Bolton girl Emma. Here's all about her and the idea behind her design.
Who Is Emma Lou?
Emma Lou is the " target="_blank" rel="noopener">winner of the nationwide competition organised by the host city Birmingham in which children of the age group 5-15 years were given the task of providing the mascot design for this year's Commonwealth Games. The design was expected to represent the history, identity and culture of the city. The 10-year-old from Bolton was overwhelmed when the organisers of the games sent the live mascot Perry to announce to her that her design was selected. Her parents and her younger sister were very proud of her achievement.
Who is Perry The Bull?
Perry The Bull has multi-coloured hexagons on its body, hairy hooves, and horns and wears the official logo of Birmingham Commonwealth Games on its white upper. When asked about the meaning behind her design, Emma explained that the hexagons were like three equilateral triangles that were not just shapes but represented that everyone relies on each other.
In the past edition of the Commonwealth Games, the mascot was the animal that held an important place in the culture of the host like Koala for Gold Coast, Tiger for India and Kangaroo for Brisbane. Emma's reason for choosing a bull to represent Birmingham was because of the Bullring situated in the city.
Once the design was selected, the Virtual Mascot Summit, the first-ever summit of mascot makers, was organised by Birmingham in which 50 children from West Midlands schools added important details and characteristics to the official mascot.
