T20 World Cup prize money row: Fourteen months since the Indian women’s team finished as runner-ups at the Women’s T20 World Cup, all the fifteen members of the squad will finally receive their due. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that each player is likely to receive a sum of $26,000 approximately for the tournament and asked them to send an invoice to claim their prize money.
The tournament was held in Melbourne, Australia earlier last year. BCCI officials told Sportstar that the amount would be disbursed this week. Earlier, The Telegraph had reported that while the winners Australia and the semi-finalist team England received their prize money of $1.6 million and $120,000 respectively within months of the event, Indian players were still waiting for their prize money.
After reports regarding delay in payment began doing rounds BCCI officials claimed there was a delay in receiving the money from the International Cricket Council (ICC). However, it is believed the amount from the world body was disbursed well in time and the women cricketers in India were to receive a hefty $500,000 as prize money. It was further reported that the players had submitted an invoice to claim match fees for the home series against South Africa that ended in March but were yet to receive payment. A BCCI official had earlier said that the senior team members were aware of the technical reason that has caused the delay in disbursing the prize money. The official explained it was the problem of the tax dispute that BCCI has been dealing with the ICC, Hindustan Times reported. "If we pay the players currently, they will have to suffer double taxation,” the official said.
Recently, the salary structure of top women cricketers had also put BCCI under the scanner. The board faced backlash over the gender pay disparity between male and female cricketers after it announced the annual salary structure for the Indian Women’s cricket team. Many people pointed out the difference between the paying structures for male and female athletes even though women have been winning matches and putting in equal effort into the game.
