Kaur’s contributions
Kaur cancelled an upcoming trip back home which was scheduled so that she could visit her sister who is in a coma after a stroke. She decided to stay in Australia and cook about 1000 meals for families who had to run for their lives after the fired destroyed their homes in East Gippsland.
Furthermore, she relocated to Bairnsdale Oval to help the community since New Year’s. She is determined to serve people who she says are like her family and works from wee hours till 11 pm.
“I realised my first duty is towards the community here where I have lived for so long. If I had left the people here during such a difficult time, I don't think I could call myself a good human being.” Kaur, 35, told SBS Punjabi.
Kaur’s food van and the help it provides
Kaur set up a food van and had 100 visitors initially. But as the fires spread, more and more victims who have had to find their homes, approached her van. Thereafter, she has been making food for more than 1000 people. The kitchen is run by four people and Kaur sleeps in a room next to it, all ready to get to work in a blink of an eye.
After obtaining leave from her job at Australia Post and cancelling her plans to visit her sister, she relocated to the relief base for evacuees.

Conditions in Australia are worsening day by day as there has been fire in every state. The blazes have hit New South Wales the most. Also, in December, the fire caused the air quality of Sydney to be 11 times worse than hazardous levels. Experts say that climate change worsens situations like this and clearly it is literally fanning the fire.
