If Golu In 'Mirzapur' Bothered You, Shweta Tripathi Sharma Has A Response
For context, Shweta's portrayal of Golu Gupta in Mirzapur was nothing short of revolutionary. Golu not only challenged traditional notions of femininity but also embodied grit and control in a world dominated by men. Shweta as Golu, a woman standing just five feet tall, brought a fierce and influential character to life which unsettled many, poking at the very core of gender biases and societal expectations.
Shweta candidly shared the surprising reactions her character received, especially from those uncomfortable with seeing a woman in such a position of power. "When the abuses came, it felt like, Why is this happening? I mean, why do people feel this way about Golu?" she said.
She added, "A fan had put this up, that the rest of Bahubali of Mirzapur are of different sizes and shapes. Nobody is questioning that. Exactly! But just because this little girl has come, and she is making you uncomfortable, and your feathers are being ruffled... At first, I felt really bad—why is this happening? And then I was like, Oh! Actually, this is what I wanted."
She added, "Then you realise that this is the reality. If a small girl, I am 5 feet, nothing, if she comes in the world of men, and a fan had put this up, that the rest of the Bahubalis of Mirzapur are of different sizes and shapes. Nobody is questioning that. But just because this little girl has come, and she is making you uncomfortable, and your feathers are being ruffled, at first I felt really bad, why is this happening?"
Over time, Shweta came to embrace the reaction, recognising that it signified her success in making the audience think. "Actually, this is what I wanted. That if I get abused in this, or if you question me, or whatever. At least it's poking you and that is what I am here to do."
