My Entrepreneur Mom Turned Adversity Into Opportunity With Creativity

Our journey at Floral Art began 21 years ago during a time of financial hardship for our family. It was then that my mom, Founder Kavita Kapur, leaned on her creative talents, honed through years of working with flowers, plants, and art as a hobby.

Starting a journey is like planting a seed; you’re never quite sure how it’s going to turn out, but there’s that hope – a tiny, flickering flame that urges you to give it all you’ve got. Our journey at Floral Art began 21 years ago during a time of financial hardship for our family. It was then that my mom, Founder Kavita Kapur, leaned on her creative talents, honed through years of working with flowers, plants, and art as a hobby.

Trained as a floral designer from the Ohara School of Ikebana, she took the first step by selling floral bouquets. My dad joined in to lend a helping hand while I was pursuing a course in commercial arts at Sophia College. Recognizing the situation, I made the decision to drop out of college to support my mom's venture. From designing our logo to handling clients, my involvement grew over time. I also pursued floral design training from the Sogetsu School of Ikebana, enhancing my understanding of flowers and their intricacies.

Our story began with small steps and relied heavily on word-of-mouth referrals

Friends, family, and clients played crucial roles in our initial growth. We ventured into exhibitions, attended networking events, and gradually expanded our business. With determination and support, we started receiving orders for trousseau packing and home decor. The concept of floral jewellery came into our repertoire at a later stage.

What has kept us going through all these years? It’s the love for what we do. There’s something magical about flowers – their colours, fragility, and ability to express what words cannot. Our dedication to our craft is what gets us up in the morning, ready to face whatever the day throws at us. But more than anything, it’s our team of karigars – the artists behind the scenes who bring our visions to life with their hands, their hearts, and their unmatched skill. They are the backbone of our organisation, crafting designs that speak volumes, touching lives one flower at a time.

The journey hasn’t been without its bumps. Like any long-term association, we’ve had our share of challenges. The world of floral design is ever-changing, with trends coming and going like the seasons. Staying relevant and keeping our designs fresh and innovative has been a constant dance. It’s about striking the right balance between tradition and innovation, between what our clients love and what they didn’t know they could love.

Turning Challenge Into Triumph, One Bloom A Time

One of the hurdles we’ve faced is the nature of our material – flowers. Beautiful, yes, but also perishable. However, this challenge has also taught us to explore and innovate with durable materials without losing the essence of natural beauty. Transitioning to dry arrangements and designs, we found ways to overcome these limitations and create stunning floral art that lasts.

Competition has been another challenge. Over the years, we’ve seen many new brands enter the space, each with their own take on floral design. It’s been inspiring to see, but also a call to continually up our game to ensure that what we offer is not just unique but unparalleled in its beauty and craftsmanship.

Despite these hurdles, we’ve found ways to keep the spark alive, to keep pushing boundaries and exploring new horizons. Our annual photoshoots and events are a testament to this spirit of exploration and celebration. These are the moments when we get to experiment, to play with new ideas and concepts, and to showcase the breadth and depth of our creativity. They are our love letters to the world of floral art, inviting others to see what’s possible when you combine passion with perseverance.

But more than anything, what these 21 years have taught us is the value of relationships – with our team, our clients, and our community. We’ve been fortunate to work with incredible people, from brides and grooms to corporate clients, each with their own vision and story. Being a part of their most cherished moments and adding our touch to their celebrations has been an honour and a privilege. It’s these relationships that keep us grounded, reminding us of why we started this journey in the first place.

Looking back, it’s clear that our journey has been about much more than flowers. It’s been about passion, dedication, and the relentless pursuit of beauty. It’s been about overcoming challenges, not by sidestepping them, but by meeting them head-on, with creativity and resilience. And as we look to the future, we do so with the same hope that sparked this journey 21 years ago, ready to face whatever comes next with open hearts and open minds. Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about the flowers. It’s about the art of bringing joy, one petal at a time.
