A popular US media house published an opinion on why musician Taylor Swift is allegedly not a good role model to teen girls. The article in Newsweek, by writer John Mac Ghlionn, criticised everything from her choice to date 'numerous' men to the fact that the 34-year-old artist remains unmarried and childless. Further in the article, the writer also slams Swift for speaking up against patriarchy, alleging it is 'hypocritical' considering her dating history.

Ghlionn's views on the American popstar have invited flak as many critics, including non-Swifties, have come forward to show their support for Swift. The article's conservative agenda reflects the patriarchal expectations that women, especially those in the public eye, are put through even in 2024.

Manners Maketh (Wo)man

Ghlionn's article cites all the ridiculously outdated qualifications of a 'good role model' that Taylor Swift allegedly fails to meet. Reading the piece felt like a time warp to a completely different era where women's worth was measured by their willingness to submit to societal expectations and endure stereotypes.

At one point in the article, Ghlionn writes, "Many of her lyrics often depict her as the victim. This might influence young women to adopt a similar perspective in their own relationships, be they romantic or otherwise. Swift is not a victim. She is the most popular musician of all time."

The article makes the reader really question why a male journalist in today's age is so bothered by women raising their voices against issues. Why is a woman's choice to share her story and freedom to express her opinions seemingly a direct attack on him?

Ghlionn acknowledges that Swift's fanbase mostly comprises teenage girls, before proceeding to criticise every aspect of her existence. It brings us back to the question of why a grownup male is so hot and bothered by a woman, a billionaire (as he emphasises, enviously), whom young girls look up to.

Swift realises her influence on young girls and she is arguably one of the most perceptive celebrities in dealing with this responsibility. She uses her platform to not only promote empowerment and social awareness but also lead by action; this deeply resonates with her audience.

The musician, who received an honorary doctorate in fine arts in 2022, continues to inspire through her music and advocacy, navigating fame with grace and authenticity. Meanwhile, Ghlionn argues that her choice to remain unmarried and childless could set a negative example for "young girls."

The article does not just sling mud on Taylor Swift's achievements but also uproots the efforts of feminists across the world who are fighting the patriarchal expectations that have kept women in shackles for centuries. It is an attempt to push harmful notions on young and impressionable girls.

Reactions To Article

Ghlionn's article has garnered criticism from across the world, as several netizens have pointed out his views that perpetuate toxic masculinity. His article insinuates that he is threatened by the impact a woman has on the world. Kudos to the publication for achieving what they wanted-- clicks.
