A few hours after their wedding, a video of the couple exiting the Leela Palace went viral. Raghav Chadha and Parineeti Chopra made their first appearance as husband and wife to greet the media.

Parineeti Trolled For Her Post Wedding Dress

While the groom was seen clad in a white shirt and blue denim with black shades, the gorgeous bride was spotted wearing a pink off-shoulder kaftan and denim. She looked absolutely adorable, but a section of netizens seemed to be “offended” by her choice of clothing. Netizens had a gripe with Chopra for “not dressing up like a new bride.”

One user opined that she could have worn a saree or an anarkali suit. Another user said that she literally “spoiled the grace of the newlywed” and should learn from Deepika. Many other users echoed the same view.

They accused the new bride of “not looking like a bride,” as she chose to wear a Western outfit rather than traditional Indian wear. Her dress was called “casual” and not a “new bride’s look.”

Can People Just Stop Controlling What Women Wear?

Why do people think they have the entitlement to dictate how a new bride should dress? Are people expecting a new bride to go around everywhere wearing a 10–20 kg lehenga and tonnes of jewellery?

Imagine being a newlywed bride who’s happily enjoying a new phase of her life and then discovering a section of people trolling you for your clothing choice! Don’t people have that much sensitivity to let a bride just be herself after all the extravagant ceremonies and rituals? Doesn’t she deserve to wear something comfortable and relax a bit?

Not The First Time!

What’s saddening is that this isn’t the first time a new bride has been trolled for her clothing choices. Kiara Advani, who tied the knot with Siddharth Malhotra earlier this year, was bashed for not wearing Mangalsutra and Sindoor like a new bride. Advani was wearing distressed denim and a white top covered by a grey shawl. Her modest and comfortable airport look, however, didn’t go well with some netizens.

The good thing about this was that many fans rose to Advani’s defence and schooled people to mind their own business. They even commended Advani for redefining the post-wedding bridal look.

Athiya Shetty, who also got married earlier this year, was also subjected to trolling for “not dressing like a bride” when she was spotted with her cricketer husband, KL Rahul. Shetty was wearing an oversized printed shirt and light blue denim. She was called out for ditching the symbols of a newlywed, including Sindhoor, Mangalsutra, etc.

Her Clothing Is Her Choice!

Isn’t marriage defined by the commitment a couple has to the relationship? How does it make sense for society to expect women alone to wear certain “symbols of marriage” to “prove” their love and commitment?

Why are women still being forced to change their surname, wear symbols of marriage, and change into a completely different person after marriage while all aspects of a man’s life remain unchanged? Why isn’t society bothered to ask the groom to dress “traditionally” and honour “Indian culture?”

The groom can wear whatever is comfortable for him, but the bride alone is expected to dress up "traditionally” because, well, she’s a woman, and patriarchal society feels the need to “control” women. And that is where the real problem lies. We are just three months away from 2024, and it’s heartbreaking that we are still fighting about how wearing Sindoor and Mangalsutra is a woman’s personal choice.
