When it comes to sexual life, women have to face many stereotypes. Turns out, having a happy sexual life itself is a taboo in a woman's life. Women are not expected to enjoy sex. Rather, sex for women is supposed to be a service they perform for the pleasure of men and procreation. To keep this stereotype intact, several myths are woven on how excessive sex can be bad for women. Some say that women who indulge in a lot of sex have loose vaginas. Others say that women with active sexual life even before marriage are slut, or labelled promiscuous. And now a new myth is that women who have more sex age faster and look old.
Let us get it straight. There is no scientific evidence that women having a lot of sex age faster. Many articles have been published busting this myth of relating women's active sexual life with ageing. Yes, issues like sexually transmitted diseases or infections might lower immunity but there is no scientific claim that it makes women look older. In fact, one of the studies shows that having frequent sexual engagement might make women look younger.
Sex Makes You Look Younger: Research
According to researcher and clinical psychologist Dr David Weeks, having regular sex can make you look like five to seven years younger. Dr Weeks interviewed men and women of all ages over 10 years. The research showed that the person who looked the youngest had sex 50 per cent more frequently. He suggested that sexual pleasure and satisfaction are key measures to look younger or preserve the youth.
Talking to a media portal, Dr Weeks said, "Sexual satisfaction is a major contributor to quality of life. It ranks as high as spiritual or religious commitment and other morale factors. Therefore, more positive attitudes towards mature sex should be vigorously promoted."
Seema Anand, the author of The Art Of Seduction and Sexual Health Influencer, said that there is no mathematical calculation of how much sex is too much sex or how much older will sex make you look. She said, "A really pleasurable good intimacy makes you feel very very happy and happiness makes you glow. Society is never going to be happy no matter what you do. So make your own decisions based on what you think is right."
Now that the fog of myth is cleared, let us talk about the agents that created it.
How society limits women's right to orgasm
In our society, women are never told about sexual pleasure. The right to pleasure is preserved for men who are appreciated if they have frequent sexual engagement. But women are neither allowed to have a satisfied sexual life nor are appreciated for having sexual partners. Even female masturbation is a taboo which could have helped women explore their sexual needs.
No matter how developed our society is, women empowerment is never seen in terms of sexual empowerment of women. Even today, families are concerned about the virginity of the woman they marry their sons to. Women who talk about sex or sexual needs are slut-shamed by society and considered inappropriate for a committed relationship.
In order to make these misconceptions look real, society comes up with the myths of sex or orgasm being harmful to women in some way or the other. But dear society, women have as much freedom to have sex as men do. Sex is a personal choice and not a social service. It is not just about procreation but also about orgasm, pleasure and satisfaction. Scientifically, sex is a healthy habit that boosts immunity, releases happy hormones and brings a glow to the face, body and life. Women too have the right to feel the benefits of frequent sex.
If you really want to put restrictions on sex, then restrict non-consensual sex. It is neither good for the health nor for the social development.
