Zero Discrimination Day 2022: Theme, Significance And All You Need To Know

 Zero Discrimination Day 2022 is observed every year on March 1  to honour everyone's right to a productive and dignified life. Inclusion, compassion, and peace are promoted on Zero Discrimination Day. The goal of Zero Discrimination Day was to mobilise a global solidarity movement to eradicate all forms of discrimination.

Participating in various activities, sharing tales or images, and speaking about it in your personal groups are all ways to commemorate Zero Discrimination Day. The United Nations organises a variety of programmes and activities to honour everyone's right to live a dignified and honourable life, regardless of their age, gender, religion, caste, colour, country, height, weight, or occupation.

Zero Discrimination Day History:

The United Nations (UN) and other international organisations commemorate Zero Discrimination Day every year on March 1. The day's goal is to promote equality before the law and in practise in all UN member countries. The day was first observed on March 1, 2014, and was announced by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé during a big event in Beijing on February 27, 2014.

Campaigners in India have used this day to speak out against laws that make discrimination against the LGBTQAI+ community.Particularly during the previous campaign to repeal the law (Indian Penal Code- section 377), that criminalised homosexuality before it was overturned by the Indian Supreme Court in September 2018.

Zero Discrimination Day 2022 Theme:

The theme for this year's Zero Discrimination Day is "Remove laws that harm, create laws that empower," with UNAIDS emphasising the importance of repealing discriminatory legislation.

There are still laws in many nations that discriminate against women and children. For example, laws do not grant women the same marriage and voting rights as men. The LGBTQAI+ community does not have the same rights as heterosexual people. Such laws are discriminatory and infringe on people's fundamental rights and freedoms.

Zero Discrimination Day Significance:

The significance of Zero Discrimination Day is to raise public awareness about such legislation, as well as other forms of discrimination, and to persuade various systems to officially stop it. As a result, states can repeal discriminatory laws and implement anti-discrimination legislation. It also inspires activists and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working in various nations to repeal discriminatory laws.
