24 women daily wage workers from Kerala took their first flight from Kochi to Bengaluru on Thursday with the money they saved for about a year. The women belonged to a wide age group, with the youngest being 45 years old and the eldest being 77 years old. They plan on travelling to Delhi next year.
The women daily wage workers from Kottayam’s Panachikkad, employed through Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
They engage in works like cleaning the roads, constructing buildings under the Panchayat, or any other routine work, had the dream of taking a flight and flying high in the sky, which got accomplished on Thursday, January 26.
24 Women Wage Workers Take First Flight
The daily wage worker women saved money from their daily earnings to buy a flight ticket, 55-year-old Geetha Unnikrishnan one of the workers told The News Minute, “We earn Rs 311 daily. Out of which, we started saving up for our dreams of travelling on an airplane and in an air-conditioned train. After saving for about a year, we got in touch with our Panchayat ward member Abyson Abraham. He gave us his full support and helped us book tickets, and even joined us on the trip to help,”
The group of women wage workers reached Bengaluru on Thursday early morning and fulfilled their dream of taking a fight. They were overjoyed by the fact that they got to visit the Vidhana Soudha, which is Karnataka’s legislative house with the help of former MLA Ivan Nigli.
Abyson Abraham said "We had contacted former MLA Ivan Nigli, and it was he who arranged a visit to Vidhana Soudha. We also took a metro train in Bengaluru,” he also added that helping the women fulfil their dream was one of the happiest moments of his life.

The daily wage worker women, belonging to the 12th ward of Panachikkad Panchayat, consist of women from different age groups, with the eldest being 77 and the youngest, being 45. Chellamma, the eldest member of the group shared her experience and said, “It was my good fortune that I got to fly via an airplane, and I am really happy about it. None of us had ever travelled on an airplane before.”
Geetha Unnikrishnan also shared that the women are planning another trip to Delhi for the next year, "We want to go to Delhi on Independence Day to see the Prime Minister hoist the flag. But we are not really sure if it will be possible, but we will try our best for it" she said.
