Women In 18-30 Age Group Most Vulnerable To Rape: Report

The majority of rape survivors are between the ages of 18 and 30 arrording to the "Women and Men in India 2022" report. The data raise the possibility that women in this age group are more vulnerable because many of them work, requiring travel between the workplace and home, late working hours, and on-site work.

According to Ambika Pandit, the report calls for increased awareness and effective measures to protect women's fundamental right to "work and earn." The report emphasizes, citing these possible causes of vulnerability among women aged 18 to 30, that such conditions should not be a burden or impediment to women's fundamental right to work and earn. The government has already taken several steps to prevent sexual harassment at work, but more needs to be done in the area of gender sensitization.

Women Most Vulnerable To Rape

It goes on to say that the lower percentage of survivors in the under-16 age group could also be due to a fear of social stigma. According to NCRB 2021, 20,065 (63 percent) of the 31,878 rape victims were aged 18 to 30; 1,030 (12-16 years), 183 (6-12 years), and 53 who were under the age of six.

The ministry of statistics and program implementation draws attention to crime data from 2016 to 2021 in a section titled "information related to impediments to empowerment," which demonstrates that three major crimes—husbands' and relatives' cruelty; assault on women with the intent to offend her modesty; and kidnapping and attempted kidnapping—account for more than 70 percent of all crime against women. One-third of all crimes were committed in women's homes due to cruelty by husbands and relatives.

The report said, "The data show that compromising women's safety starts at home!" and emphasised that the report only included reported cases. The figures could be way higher if unregistered cases are included. d.

According to the National Family Health Survey data, one-third of women in the country face violence from their husbands. The percentage of married women between the ages of 18 to 49 who experienced physical, emotional, or sexual violence committed by their husband slightly decreased. The percentage went from 33.3 percent from 2015 to 2018 to 31.9 percent in 2019 to 2021.
