According to a survey conducted by the National Health Survey, the state with the highest percentage of women drinkers is Sikkim, where 23 per cent of women consume alcohol. In Assam, 6.9 per cent of women drink alcohol. The percentage of women who drink is less than 1 per cent in Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Punjab and Bihar.
In Manipur, t12he percentage of women drinking is 6.1%, while Tripura and Meghalaya recorded 4.8% and 2.1% respectively.
The survey found that women in rural Assam consumed more alcohol than women in urban areas.
Earlier this year, a report released by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said Sikkim is the safest place for working women. According to the research, the state has the highest number of points -- 30 -- as a measure of women’s safety. At the other extreme is Delhi, which had only 8.5 points.
According to a study, rural women prefer solitary drinking at home. There is also underreporting of female alcohol use due to gender-specific and socio-cultural factors. Moreover, women do not treat themselves for alcoholism, but instead seek medical help for the physical complications due to alcohol.
