With the defeat, their gold dream has been shattered. However, it was heartening to see the team giving an exemplary performance to reach the semi-finals. The team grappled with racism, financial crisis, electricity shortages, flooded home and many other problems to reach where they have.

The Indian women’s hockey team beat three-time champions Australia 1-0 to book a semi-final berth for the first time. India had made their first Olympic appearance at the 1980 Games in Moscow. The second was at the 2016 Olympics in Rio. In 2021, the Indian women’s hockey team scripted history by competing in their second consecutive Olympics for the first time.

Indian women Olympians at Tokyo 2020 so far

Owing to weightlifter Mirabai Chanu silver medal victory, India India won its first medal at the Tokyo Olympics. She lifted a combined total of 202kg to place second in the 49kg category.

PV Sindhu defeated He Bing Jiao in straight games and clinched bronze medal at the Tokyo Games. With this feat, she became the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals.

Lovlina Borgohain won bronze medal at the ongoing 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She became the first woman boxer from Assam to qualify for Tokyo after finishing third place at the Asia and Oceania Boxing Olympics qualifiers, defeating Maftunakhon Melieva of Uzbekistan in April this year.

Indian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur made it to the finals in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics but couldn't clinch any medal and was at the 6th spot.
