Three Women Farmers Dead After Truck Runs Over Them Near Tikri Border: Reports

Women farmers death: A truck that rammed into a group of women farmers near the protest site at Tikri border in Haryana has reportedly left three dead and two injured. The incident happened in Jhajjar, where the women protestors were waiting on a road divider for an autorickshaw Thursday early morning. As per reports, the truck driver is on the run.

Police said the women protestors hailed from Punjab and were taking a train back to their native village, as per Indian ExpressThe deceased have been identified as Amarjeet Kaur, Gurmail Kaur and Harsinder Kaur.

Out of the five casualties in the accident, two women died on the spot, one died on the way to a hospital in Rohtak while two others injured are reportedly out of danger.

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Channi tweeted his condolences saying he was "deeply grieved by this tragic incident" and urged Haryana police to put the accused behind bars.

Women Farmers Death In Haryana: What You Should Know

The farmers' protest - with agitators primarily from Punjab and Haryana - has been ongoing near the Delhi border for almost a year now against the centre's controversial farm laws. The Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur borders are the main protest sites where farmers in thousands are camping. As per reports, the farmers' protests have resulted in around 700 casualties.

The Punjab government has announced the three deceased women's families will get a compensation of five lakh rupees and a government job each, reports say.

Earlier this month on October 3, violence erupted in Lakhimpur Kheri after Union Minister Ajay Mishra's convoy reportedly rammed into protesting farmers, leaving four dead. Accused in the case included Mishra's son Ashish, who witnesses said was inside one of the vehicles that caused the accident. He was arrested on October 9.
