Reports in the past have shown that female owned businesses in the United States, survived the recession in larger numbers, compared to men. Another recent report by Spark Business Barometer Survey from Capital One has shown that women entrepreneurs are much more optimistic about the current state of the country’s economy.
The report states that where only 11% male entrepreneurs in U.S.A feel that economic conditions are excellent or good; a whopping 63% of female entrepreneurs find the conditions favourable. Women were also found to be more optimistic about their current conditions, with 46 % men saying their business was in a fair or a poor state as compared to 35 % women.
Keri Gohman, head of small business banking at Capital One, told Forbes, “One of the things we’ve seen is just continued positive sentiment around the economic outlook; both women and men view current business conditions as improving.” According to the study, a total of 57% of the surveyed entrepreneurs (both male and female) said they were in a good or excellent condition and 46% said that they plan to give raises in 2015.
Women, however, were generally found have a more positive outlook towards their businesses. According to Gohman, “More than one-third of business owners are women… We’re seeing a growth rate at about one and a half times the national rate.” She adds, “Women tend to be growing in the ecommerce and digital sectors, which we know are growing. That could have some influence.”
Even though the reason behind this optimism gap is still unclear, the research indicates that male entrepreneurs are more aggressive about investing in businesses while women are holding onto cash more. Further research is being done to find out more about this unexplainable pattern.
