The world of online gaming is evolving, and with it, the demographics of players. Contrary to the common belief that gaming is a male-dominated arena, a pan-India survey has revealed a significant shift in the landscape. According to the Lumikai Gaming Report, a comprehensive study involving 2,317 participants from diverse backgrounds, women now constitute a remarkable 41% of India's gaming community.
Understanding the New Face of Indian Gamers
The survey divulges intriguing insights into the preferences and demographics of gamers in the country. The majority of gamers, approximately 50%, fall within the age group of 18-30 years. More remarkably, the male-to-female ratio in the gaming community stands at a balanced 60:40. These statistics challenge the stereotypical image of a gamer and highlight the growing appeal of gaming to a diverse audience.
Debunking Stereotypes: Women's Growing Influence in Gaming
Contrary to conventional wisdom, last year's study also reveals that women in India are devoting more time to gaming than men. On average, women spend a remarkable 11.2 hours per week playing games, while their male counterparts clock in at 10.2 hours per week. These statistics challenge stereotypes and underline the growing prominence of women in the gaming community.
The Shift from Hobby to Profession
A recent study, the 'HP India Gaming Landscape Study 2022,' has shed light on this remarkable trend. It reveals that not only are women gamers a significant part of the gaming community, but they are also increasingly considering gaming as a viable career option. In fact, a staggering 56 percent of women gamers are now contemplating a future in gaming, whether full-time or part-time. What drives this shift from gaming as a hobby to a career? For 50 percent of women, the answer is simple: passion. The thrill of gaming has captured their hearts, and they are eager to transform their beloved pastime into a profession. But it's not just about passion; it's about prospects too. 45 percent of female gamers see a bright financial future in the gaming industry.
The study reveals that they are intrigued by the prospect of becoming influencers in the gaming community or even diving into the world of gaming software development.
India's Ascent on the Global Gaming Stage
Chairman of the India Game Developer Conference (IGDC), Rajesh Rao, in conversation with The Hindu, emphasised the remarkable growth of the gaming industry, particularly in the Indian market. He highlighted how India is rapidly becoming one of the largest gaming markets globally. The Lumikai Report introduces an intriguing dimension to this growth, emphasising the substantial involvement of women, who now make up 41% of the total gaming community.
Rao's observations don't stop at the numbers. He notes that gaming startups are on a quest for brand recognition, and the big names in the industry are rallying behind them. Apps are now endorsed by celebrities, and YouTube channels dedicated to game reviews and tutorials are witnessing an unprecedented surge in viewership.
Gaming Beyond Metros
What's even more impressive is that 66% of gamers hail from non-metropolitan regions. This statistic underscores the democratisation of gaming experiences across the country. It's no longer confined to urban centres; gaming has become a widespread pastime that transcends geographical boundaries.
Meteoric Rise of India's Digital Gaming Industry
With revenues reaching USD 3.1 billion in the financial year 2023, this sector is poised to more than double in value, reaching an astounding USD 7.5 billion by FY28. The factors propelling this remarkable growth are diverse and underpin India's growing prominence in the global gaming arena.
A Triad of Growth Drivers
The Indian gaming industry's growth can be attributed to three primary factors:
1. In-App Purchases: Fueling Revenue
In-app purchases have emerged as a potent revenue source for gaming companies. Gamers are increasingly willing to invest in virtual items, in-game currency, and various enhancements, generating a significant stream of revenue for the industry.
2. Ad Revenues: Powering Growth
The Indian gaming sector has harnessed the power of advertising to its advantage. In-game advertisements and partnerships have contributed significantly to the industry's income, further propelling its growth.
3. Expanding User Base: A Massive Market
The industry's exceptional growth is intrinsically linked to its ever-expanding user base. With 568 million gamers in FY23, including 25 percent of paying users, India's gaming community is flourishing. Remarkably, over 50 percent of all Indian internet users are now part of this burgeoning gaming population, highlighting the industry's broad appeal.
The Real Money Gaming Frontier
While the Indian gaming industry is on an upward trajectory, there are challenges ahead, particularly in the real money gaming (RMG) sector. Despite a USD 500 million revenue increase in FY23, the RMG segment is poised to face headwinds due to recent taxation policies and industry consolidation. Navigating these challenges will be critical for the industry's continued growth.
The gaming industry in India is undergoing a remarkable transformation, and the recent survey highlights a significant increase in women's participation in this dynamic space. With diverse demographics and evolving preferences, India's gaming arena is poised for exciting times ahead.
