The Agniveer scheme across all defence forces has worked its way into several inductions, the application process for which had begun on November 1 this year. On Saturday, addressing a press conference, the Indian Navy Chief declared that the first batch of Agniveers has been inducted into the Navy and more than 300 women have been part of the inductions.
The Chief also made a significant announcement sharing that starting from 2023, the Indian Navy will induct women officers across all branches and they won't be limited to only 7-8 branches as in the current scenario.
Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar announced that the Navy has inducted 341 women Agniveers in the first batch, and it's the first time that women have been inducted into the ranks.

Women Agniveers Inducted In Navy
Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar emphasised the growing need to devise plans that support the true meaning of equality and equal opportunity across forces. Talking about their work in the navy in this regard, he stated that women are being inducted into ranks and not separately like in earlier times.
Kumar added that women are being assessed in the same manner as their male colleagues. The Indian Navy is following a uniform method of selection for the Agniveers and several women have come forward and participated in the selection processes from across the country. As per the data, of the 10 lakh people who applied for the diverse positions, the total number of women was 82,000.
Gender neutral force
The Chief announced that all the Agniveer women selected will be treated in the same capacity as the make officers. They will be delayed across aircraft, aircraft and ships, and will be under training for every routine a usual sailor is trained for.
The Admiral made clear that there will be no difference in how the training is conducted at the respective bases as it's a gender-neutral force they'll all aim to become. A force, he continued, "which only looks at the capability of the individual and not the gender."
Declaring publicly that the Indian Navy will become Atmanirbhar by 2047, the Chief stated that they are following all the guidelines listed by the government to do so and that the commissioning of INS Vikrant serves as a landmark event to pump up the spirits in the right direction. Indian-made first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant was recently commissioned by PM Narendra Modi in Kochi.
In June, the government of India launched the Agnipath Recruitment Scheme which stated that going forward, the defence forces must recruit Sailors, Airmen and Soldiers under this scheme.
