Woman Swims 36 Kms In Mumbai Sea
Her post garnered over four million views on Instagram, along with hundreds of positive comments.
A user highlighted that these were the types of influencers we really needed because they truly influence us in an inspirational way. Another pointed out that, given the traffic in Mumbai, everyone has to resort to swimming. A third user who identified themselves as a swimmer said they knew what it would take to swim 36 kilometres. The user revealed the longest swim they’ve done was 7.5 km, and it took six hours of training over a period of three months.
In March 2023, Burman became the first Indian woman to complete a two-way swim across the Palk Strait (from India to Sri Lanka and back). She completed the 62 km distance starting from Shanushkodi Old Harbour at 4.45 on March 15 and finishing at Arichal Munai at 12.20 pm on March 16, setting a record swim time of 19 hours and 31 minutes.
She had earlier tried to achieve this record in 2022 but couldn’t pursue it due to a shoulder injury. This year, she has been practising since January. She swam 40 km in 7 hours and 26 minutes from Bandra Worli Sea Link to Elphanta in Mumbai at night.
Burman was born in Agartala and raised in Bengaluru. She began swimming at the age of 4, under the training of her father. Apart from being an elite ultra-marathon swimmer, Burman is also a Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS)-certified swimmer and an open water coach for open water swimming enthusiasts and triathletes.
