Marya Shakil called the UP elections right. Her reporting was on the spot. At a time when may questioned whether BJP would win, Marya's reporting consistently suggested the victory long before the actual feelers started coming in. Separate from seasoned analysts, psephologists and studio sitters, Marya picked the pulse of voters that reflected on-ground reporting.
Marya is a Senior political journalist with over 12 years’ experience in anchoring, reporting. She has been reporting and writing regularly through the election season. Her forte has been the heartlands of Bihar and UP and little wonder then getting the pulse on the ground came naturally to her.
She is associated with planning, strategising, coordinating and supervising editorial content. Marya has conducted interviews of prominent political leaders and ministers at both regional and national levels and important newsmakers including BJP President Amit Shah and FM Arun Jaitley.
My piece on UP. 'BJP, under Modi, seems to have built up this new class of aspirational poor in the last two years' https://t.co/6J1BZ8oIRZ

Marya's CNN News profile says her show on the Muslims yearning to be part of the mainstream earned her the prestigious Ramnath Goenka Award in Politics and Government category in 2012. She also received the award in the same category for the Lok Sabha election coverage of 2014. Marya reported during the General Elections of 2009, 2014 and the state assembly elections of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana and Jharkhand etc. She joined CNN-News18 after completing her Masters in Mass Communication from Jamia Millias AJK Mass Communication Research Centre in 2005.
"Marya is amongst the hardest reporters I have seen In my life. She brings great deal of passion to her work," says Executive Editor of CNN News 18 Bhupendra Chaubey. "Having been her chief of bureau for many years, I myself have witnessed first hand how she has grown over the years. I am not surprised at all with her multi platform coverage of UP elections. It's the result of many years of hard work. She makes our team and me in particular enormously proud."
She also won the prestigious Chevening South Asia Journalism Fellowship in 2016. Travelling in the Hindi-heartland and learning from people is what she likes most.
I must say that @maryashakil was the only one to have got the UP conundrum bang on! #ElectionResults
