Historic First: A Woman Officer To Lead Air Force March On R-Day

For the first time in India's history, the upcoming Republic Day celebrations will feature an exceptional display of courage and expertise as an all-female tri-service contingent takes the spotlight. The IAF marching contingent, led by Squadron Leader Rashmi Thakur, includes Squadron Leader Sumita Yadav, Squadron Leader Pratiti Alhuwalia, and Flight Lieutenant Kirti Rohil as supernumerary officers. Squadron Leader Thakur, known for her expertise as a fighter controller, embodies the spirit of dynamic leadership, inspiring a new era of inclusivity in the armed forces.

Among the remarkable women leading this contingent is Indian Air Force squadron leader Sumita Yadav, a distinguished professional with an impressive background.

Fifteen Women Pilots to Operate Various Platforms

Adding to this momentous occasion, fifteen female pilots from the Indian Air Force (IAF) will showcase their skills by operating various platforms during the aerial flypast, according to officials. This not only underscores the capabilities of women in aviation but also serves as a testament to the IAF's commitment to gender inclusivity.

The Indian Air Force's marching contingent is being led by Squadron Leader Rashmi Thakur, accompanied by Squadron Leader Sumita Yadav, Squadron Leader Pratiti Alhuwalia, and Flight Lieutenant Kirti Rohil as supernumerary officers. Squadron Leader Thakur, who is known for her expertise as a fighter controller, embodies the spirit of dynamic leadership, inspiring a new era of inclusivity in the armed forces.

Talking about Squadron Leader Sumita Yadav, she is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication and transitioned from a successful career in journalism to joining the Indian Air Force. Her journey includes a standout moment when she marched in the Bastille Day parade in Paris last July. This prestigious event saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the chief guest, and Yadav, an air traffic controller in the Air Force, stood as a symbol of excellence.

Tri-Services Inclusion: Agniveervayu (Women) Contingent Takes the Stage

In addition to the IAF contingent, a tri-services contingent of Agniveervayu (Women) is set to participate in the Republic Day parade, making a powerful statement about the increasing role of women in the armed forces. A total of 48 Agniveervayu women will be part of this contingent, showcasing their dedication and commitment to the nation.

Flight Lieutenant Shrishti Verma will march as a supernumerary officer of the tri-services contingent, symbolising unity among the armed forces. Her presence further exemplifies the collaborative efforts of the Army, Navy, and Air Force in fostering an environment of diversity and equality.

IAF's Republic Day Tableau

The theme of the IAF's Republic Day tableau will be "Bharatiya Vayu Sena: Saksham, Sashakt, Atmanirbhar," emphasising the Air Force's strength, capability, and self-reliance. Flight Lieutenant Ananya Sharma and Flying Officer Asma Sheikh, both Su-30 pilots, will be present on the tableau, symbolizing the leadership and achievements of women in the IAF.

The participation of women officers, led by Squadron Leader Rashmi Thakur and Sumita Yadav, in key roles during the Republic Day parade is a landmark moment in India's military history. This not only showcases the competence of women in the armed forces but also reinforces the nation's commitment to gender equality and inclusivity. As these brave women take center stage, they inspire future generations to dream big and break through traditional stereotypes.

The Republic Day parade, scheduled to commence at 10:30 am on January 26 from Vijay Chowk, will be under the command of Delhi Area Commander Lt Gen Bhavnish Kumar. 

This Republic Day parade will mark a historic moment as it showcases the first-ever all-women tri-service contingent. This includes women troops of the Army's military police, along with their counterparts from the Navy and Air Force. The participation of women across all three services emphasizes the strides made towards gender inclusivity and equality in the armed forces.
