Road safety remains a major concern in India with many cases of accidents reported every passing day. Tragically, the misfortunes of cyclists often go unnoticed just as they get ignored on roads. Cyclists often become victims of others' bad driving practices and it is not only their safety that is at stake but also their livelihood and the life of their families who are at home thinking they went to work.

As an initiative to help out these cyclists, a young woman from Uttar Pradesh decided to install red lights in the cycles of people she met on road free of cost so that their cycles are visible to other vehicles even in low visibility.

Khushi Pandey is a social worker and public speaker who has an active participant in non-government organisations (NGOs). She has worked for the welfare of underprivileged people in Lucknow during winters by distributing blankets, warm clothes and various other things.

Her recent initiative is installing free red lights on cycles that she comes across on roads. She can be seen holding a placard saying, "Cycle pe light lagao #Lucknow #Khushi" and installs a red light that blinks on switching it on. She does this for free so that these cyclists are visible to the passing vehicles on road and avoids getting into accidents.

The idea came to her after she lost her grandfather in 2020 in a road accident. Pandey's grandfather was cycling when he was hit by a car that didn't see him. The accident made Khushi Pandey realise the dilemma of cyclists who have to travel long distances for work. The same year, she began her free red light installation initiative and has so far installed around 1500 red lights in Lucknow.

Her act is being praised by people online who have commented "Great initiative, god bless" under her posts on her social media. She also gets blessings from the cyclists who are happy that there are people who think about their safety as well.
